Cross-Sell Subject Lines in Claude Desktop
Cross-sell campaigns live or die on the subject line. With marginal's email MCP server connected to Claude Desktop, you can draft variants, launch a subject line A/B test, and pull lift metrics — all from a chat window, no dashboard hopping.
Why cross-sell needs its own subject line test
Cross-sell emails target customers who already bought — so the framing differs from acquisition. The winning angle might be a complementary product, a bundle nudge, or a 'pairs well with your recent order' hook. Testing these angles head-to-head tells you what actually moves clicks for your installed base.
Running this inside Claude Desktop keeps the loop tight: you describe the product pair and audience, and the AI agent drafts subject lines worth testing instead of you guessing in a spreadsheet.
- Bundle framing vs. single-add-on framing
- Benefit-led vs. urgency-led cross-sell copy
- Personalized references to a prior purchase
- Discount-on-companion vs. value-only messaging
The workflow in Claude Desktop
Once marginal is connected as an MCP server, Claude Desktop can call four tools to run the full cross-sell experiment. You stay in conversation while the agent handles generation, sending, and measurement.
- generate_variants — produce cross-sell subject line options from your product and audience context
- launch_test — start the managed send and split traffic across variants
- get_results — read open and click rates with within-test lift metrics
- recommend_next — get a suggested follow-up variant or winner to scale
A practical cross-sell test prompt
Give Claude Desktop enough context to write subject lines that reference the cross-sell relationship. For example: 'Customers bought a coffee grinder last month; cross-sell whole-bean subscriptions. Generate 5 subject line variants emphasizing freshness and convenience, then launch a subject line A/B test.'
Claude will call generate_variants, then launch_test against your list. A day or two later, ask it to call get_results and the within-test lift metrics will show which framing is winning so you can lock in the subject line before the full send completes.
Getting set up
marginal is a hosted email MCP server, so there's nothing to deploy. Point Claude Desktop at the endpoint at https://marginal.sh/mcp and authenticate with your Bearer API key. The free tier covers 100 experiments per month — plenty to validate a cross-sell subject line program before scaling.
See the docs at https://marginal.sh/docs/ for tool schemas and example AI agent email marketing flows.
